Son of Jean Achille MELANCON & Marie Euphrosine PREJEAN of St. Landry Parish. Married, age 19, (1) Cleonide BROUSSARD, 26 Nov 1855, St. John Catholic Church, Vermilionville, 9 children. Living in Lafayette Parish when he enlisted in Company A, 10 Mar 62, Lafayette Parish, age 26. Present 1 Jul-31 Oct 62. Slightly wounded in leg, Chickasaw Bayou, Dec 62, according to pension application. On U.S. POW rolls, captured Vicksburg, 4 Jul 63. Paroled as POW, Vicksburg, 8 Jul 63. Probably went home on parole. On roll, HQ, Allen's Brigade, Shreveport, 29 Mar 64, reported in camp for exchange at Alexandria before 1 Apr 64. End-of-war POW paroled New Iberia, Jul or Aug 65. Married, age 39, (2) Estelle HULOT, 16 Feb 1876, Lafayette, 3 children; age 55, (3) Euphemie DECOUX, 1891, Youngsville, 2 children. Applied for state pension 15 May 1899 & 10 Aug 99, age 63, in which he stated: "I have no real or personal property.... I was ward constable, but on account of my failing eyesight I was compelled to resign my office, and am now unable to earn a living.... My children are all poor & unable to support me.... I make a little garden; I am not able to earn a living, being crippled in the hand." Died 21 February 1902, age 65. Buried St. Anne Catholic Cemetery, Youngsville, row 16, tomb 39W. // Booth, La.
